St. Petersburg, FL (March 24, 2020) – On March 1, 2020, runner Justin Doyle collapsed on the Skyway bridge during a 10K marathon. Bystanders rushed to help Doyle and called out to two emergency vehicles within sight.
However, the 48-year-old runner failed to receive the medical attention that he needed due to confusion between the emergency crews. According to St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Lt. Steven Lawrence, both crews through the other had already sent help.
In reality, help had only been sent to the wrong location. This left Doyle dying at the center of a chaotic scene near the 5 mile mark of the race. He only had one more mile to go.
Witnesses called 911 and worked to flag down rescue crews. After minutes passed without a response, witnesses loaded Doyle into a school bus being used to transport runners. Now St. Petersburg FIre Rescue has launched an investigation to understand how Doyle was deprived of the medical attention he needed. The agency released a statement, saying:
St. Petersburg Fire Rescue is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life at this year’s Skyway 10K charity race. We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased individual. St. Petersburg Fire Rescue is coordinating with all the agencies involved in response to the incident at the charity race. We have scheduled a comprehensive post-incident analysis to determine the facts surrounding this tragic incident.
